Protecting The rights of the Child × Work with Community
Our Purpose
“What if I had been born as a child along Thai-Myanmar border—what would my life be like?”
As volunteering at Thai-Myanmar border, we have witnessed the life of Myanmar migrant children. They sell fruits along the streets and work with adults in the farm.
During school hours—at the age when children should be learning—they remain absent from classrooms.
These children are displaced by conflict or poverty in Myanmar so most of them don’t have legal document. It is difficult for them to attend Thai schools due to language barrier and economic situation. Their childhood is a daily struggle for survival. We couldn’t look away because we faced hardship of them. It was this deep empathy that inspired the founding of Glocal Action Association.
Our Mission
Sincerity and Equality are the values of Glocal Action. We firmly believe that every child deserves to be cared for and given the opportunity to realize their dreams. Therefore, we built up long-term partnership wish Thailand-Myanmar border community. Our aim is to ensure displaced people has dignity and ability to create better future by their own capacity.
What they need is not pity, but the power of companionship to develop themselves
Nana who is a Myanmar migrant girl came to Thailand with her mother. She unable to attend school because of poverty and lack of legal document.
Glocal Action worked with local communities to establish schools. Afterwards Nana finally came to school to have basic education. The joy on her face shows our belief in the importance of education. Besides, she dreams of becoming a teacher to teach the children in her village. This really motivated us to do our service projects.
Migrant Children Education Project
Myanmar's unstable politics have driven 2 million people to Thailand. Migrant workers live in basic shelters, and their children are 'stateless' and unprotected. In Mae Sot, over 50,000 Myanmar children face poverty, language barriers and lack of legal document. Many children fall into child labor, and schooling remains an unattainable dream.
Thai Karen Village ducation Project
Thai Karen people in Thailand's mountains rely on gathering and farming cultivation. Their remote location makes accessing school difficult for children. With limited infrastructure, they can only meet basic needs. Modernization increases the risk of disadvantage for Karen children.
Community School Program
The February 2021 military coup in Myanmar has triggered armed conflict, displacing over 3 million people displaced who urgently need food, medical care and education. Many schools are closed or bombed during civil war. Many children live in fear.
Work with Local Community to Establish Community Schools to Protect Children
"After devoted into Thailand-Myanmar Border for over 20 years, we have seen the importance of self-help. By providing resources, building capacity and empowering individuals, we can create a local mutual assistance network and improve situation together." ――Sam Lai , Secretary General of Glocal Action Assocation
Supporting a School Means Uplifting an Displaced Community
Glocal Action support local communities to establish their own schools. We provide teaching stipends to train local youth as educators who not only teach core subjects like language, mathematics and science, but also teach art, IT, reading and local culture into the curriculum. Long-term support covers running cost: land rent fee, utilities, learning materials, campus renovation, food supplies, medicine and toys. We also connect Taiwan Youth volunteer teams to share IT, health, science, art and music knowledge
From 40 Children Returning to Class to 1,700 Studying Steadily
10 years ago, we helped Green Water School reopen, welcoming 40 joyful children back to the classroom. Since then, over 500 students have graduated and gave back to their communities—like 18-year-old teacher Nai Yi, who returned to her school to teach after completing higher education. Their growth brings hope not only to themselves but to the entire community.
Even though in the challenges of Covid-19 and Myanmar civil war period , we still did home-based learning, delivered emergency aid with local teachers and supported Community-Based Organizations such as Tak Border Children Assistance Foundation, Mae Tao Clinic, Minmahal School and Special Education Center of Karen Woman Organization in the refugee camp.
